Beginner course student

We are running a five week Beginner Tap Dance course in Sheffield here at our dance studios in Sheffield.

This is a five week beginner course covering some essentials of tap dance technique. It’s suitable for complete beginners to the style, anyone who’s always wanted to try ballet and wants to know more, as well as for those who already know the style but want to refresh their technique. The course will allow students the time to focus on mastering the technique, with suitable guidance and support.

At the end of the course you’ll have been taught the basic elements of tap dance and have put them into practice with short choreographed sequences.

Alongside learning tap dance technique suitable for beginners, you will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Taking a dance class will also improve your fitness, conditioning, flexibility, strength, balance, posture, memory, co-ordination, mental wellbeing and more..!

The course will be taught by one of Hype Dance’s experienced professional dance tutors, Joanne Payne, with her fun and engaging approach. We’re positive you will enjoy the sessions, and will definitely learn something new!

The full course costs £32.50 (just £6.50 per class) and must be booked and paid for in advance and is suitable for ages 17 upwards, of any experience. If you are unable to make all of the sessions you can book onto individual classes that you can make by following this link.

You do not need any previous dance experience to take part in this beginner ballet dance course.

Other tap dance classes

As well as this Beginner Tap Dance Course in Sheffield we also run drop-in tap dance classes in Sheffield for all level of students. Drop-in dance classes for adults are on Wednesday evenings from 19:05, and cost £7.50 / £6.50 NUS. These classes must be booked in advance and can be booked online.

For children and young people we run tap dance classes for ages 5 upwards. These classes are on Saturdays and are International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) syllabus based classes.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear for class / should I bring anything with me?

We don’t have a dress code for our adult classes / courses so you can wear something appropriate that you feel comfortable in. For tap dance, most people wear leggings / joggers or shorts and a vest top or tee. If you don’t have tap shoes, please wear hard soled shoes that you can dance in, NOT trainers!

We suggest bringing a water bottle along to class – you can refill it here too.

Can I join the course if I can not make all of the dates / miss the start?

Yes, you can individually book and pay for each class that you can make. Please bear in mind that the course is designed to progress in level each week so it may be best waiting for the start of next course rather than joining in weeks 4 or 5.

What do I do when I get there?

When you arrive press the buzzer (to the left of the black doors) and let us know what you are here for. Push the door when you hear the buzzing sound, then head inside and up to the waiting area, which is on the left at the top on the stairs.

If you need to change clothes, please use the designated changing space (just through the waiting area). Please bring CLEAN footwear for the studio, especially during autumn / winter when it is often muddy outside.

Once you are ready, take a seat in the waiting area until your dance tutor comes to get you for your class. Please take your belongings with you into the studio, where there are hooks to hang bags and coats on.

Can I change my booking or get a refund?

You can amend your booking up to 2 hours in advance of the class by heading to our customer portal. If you haven’t used the portal before, simply click on the “forgot password” link, enter the email address you used to book, and follow the instructions.

We don’t offer refunds on dance classes (other than in exceptional circumstances), as you’ll already have seen in our terms and conditions! We’re happy for you to reschedule your booking as outlined above though.!
