Dance WORKSHOP Description

We have been offered an amazing opportunity to work with professional company DeNada Dance and learn some of their rep. As a bonus you will also get a ticket to see their show, Mariposa at the Drama Studio in Sheffield. This is a great opportunity and we couldn’t be more excited!

Join in this fun, accessible and in-depth exploration of repertory from DeNada Dance Theatre’s Mariposa: a Queer Tragedy Inspired by Madame Butterfly, coming to Drama Studio Sheffield on Feb 10. This practical workshop will be divided in two parts.

First, we will learn a section of choreography from the production, taught by choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra. This character-driven section is set to Caribbean rhythms and is part of one of the most striking scenes you’ll watch in the production. Next, Carlos will lead a workshop on how to portray character through dance, using elements from the creative process for Mariposa.

The workshop is suitable for people of all levels, including physical theatre performers.

Carlos Pons Guerra

Carlos is an independent choreographer who has created work for companies including Ballet Hispanico of New York, Rambert, Nashville Ballet, Northern Ballet, Sadler’s Wells, Northern Opera, the National Ballet of the Dominican Republic and the Metropolitan Ballet of Medellín, amongst others. His choreography has been described as combining “lacerating social comment with outrageous showmanship. It’s witty, it’s penetrating, and it’s personal” The Observer.

DeNada Dance Theatre

DeNada is an independent dance company based in the North of England. Founded in 2012, it creates and tours bold and exciting narrative works that represent the narratives of LGBTQ+ people, and has a strong aesthetic based on its Hispanic and Latinx cultural heritage. www.denada-dance.com

Mariposa

Mariposa is a queer adaptation of Puccini’s iconic opera, Madame Butterfly. Set in Cuba, in a dockland world of faded showgirls, troubled sailors and hopeful rent boys, it is a highly dramatic story about the sacrifices we are ready to make in order to be loved and accepted.
